Stephen Harris and Alison Donley qualified in 1994 1996 respectively, from the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy, London, UK.
To become an Osteopath and Naturopath in the UK requires the undertaking of a four year full-time course. This includes an in-depth study of human anatomy, neurology, physiology, pathology, orthopaedics, rheumatology and psychosomatics, which equip us to analyse and diagnose your problems. They have both done extensive postgraduate courses in the UK and New Zealand.
Alison Donley is registered with the New Zealand Society of Naturopaths. She has a special interest in the treatment of women and children.
Stephen Harris is registered with the Osteopathic Council of New Zealand. He is ACC registered.
It is often easier to say what Osteopathy and Naturopathy can't help fix, as so many areas of the body are able to be covered. Many people come to the practice for treatment of one body area and end up having other problems fixed at the same time! This is particularly common with low back pain and digestive problems as they are very closely linked.
Common problems are lowback pain, sciatica, neck pain, headaches, shoulder problems, hip pain, sports injuries and arthritis.
WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY ?
Osteopathy is a health care profession complementary to medicine. It is a system of diagnosis and treatment which is concerned with the inter-relationship between the structure of the body and the way in which it works
WHAT IS NATUROPATHY ?
Naturopaths are trained to diagnose and treat the patient rather than the disease. It is a truly holistic therapy, based on the recognition that the body possesses an inherent ability to heal itself. Treatment measures include nutritional medicine, supplement use, specific diets, relaxation techniques, hydrotherapy, exercises, advanced massage techniques, joint mobilisation, cranial and fascial work.
This is similar to that with any medical practice. It will be important to know how the symptoms began and factors which affect them.
After a complete medical history is taken, a careful examination of the whole body is undertaken. This will often include orthopaedic, neurological or circulatory tests. X-rays, blood, urine analysis or records of dietary habit may be requested. You will be asked to remove some of your clothing and to perform a series of simple movements so that the mobility of your body can be evaluated.
Once diagnosis is made, the types of treatment necessary will be explained to you and some timescale for your recovery will be discussed. If you are not considered suitable for treatment, then you will be appropriately referred.
A wide variety of treatment method are employed, according to the age and problem of each individual. These include soft tissue ‘massage’ to muscles and ligaments, cranial techniques, passive stretching and joint traction and manipulation to improve joint mobility. Treatment will be specially tailored
A Naturopathic bias to treatment may also include fasting, hydrotherapy, cupping, nutritional support, herbalism and homeopathy.
Treatments may include advice on your posture, diet and lifestyle. What you do at work, home, sport and leisure can greatly affect your progress and your part in this is just as important as the actual treatment.
